These beautiful terra cotta clay craft pots
have many uses -- use them for plant pots, Easter pots / baskets,
decorations, or as containers to hold fruit or any other item.
This terra cotta clay craft idea is great for kids and adults. Learn how to make your own free
terra cotta clay plant pot now.

Materials Required:
- Terra cotta (clay) pot
- Podgy (Podgy is a multipurpose glue, glaze and
sealer. You can also use a spray glaze if you don't have
Podgy. If you don't use Podgy, use glue to glue your picture
onto the terra cotta plant pot.)
- Your favorite picture
- Paints in your choice of color
- Paint brush or sponge brush
Important Care Instructions:
Please do not plant anything directly into the terra cotta pot.
They may crack with the moisture of the water.
Instead, first plant your plant into a slightly smaller plastic
pot, then place this pot into to your terra cotta pot.
When watering your plant, remove the plastic pot, and water the
plant in the sink or a bowl. When
you are done, and the plant has fully drained, put the plastic pot back
into your terra cotta pot. This
pot is best used indoors.
Instructions:
Using a brush (I like to use a sponge brush - you can
purchase them for around a dollar at craft stores), apply the Podgy to
the inside and outside of your pot. This will give it some protection against moisture. Let dry.
Now paint the outside and the inside of the pot with a color
that matches your picture. You will need to apply two or three coats.
You will know you have enough coats when the color is vibrant,
even, and has no lighter streaks showing.
Let each coat dry before applying the next.
Prepare your picture. I
like to have my picture on thin paper (regular stock is fine, but if you
have lighter weight paper, it is better).
The thinner the paper, the better it lays on the pot.
If you have a photograph, photocopy it, or scan it into a
computer and print it. Before
printing, adjust (shrink or enlarge) the size to fit the plant pot.
Cut out the picture. If
you have scissors with a fancy edge, use them – it adds a nice touch.
(If you don’t have a photograph, a picture from a magazine will
work wonderfully.) The
picture can be any size. I like to center the picture, and leave at least an inch on all sides (so
you can see an inch of pot around the picture).
Apply another layer of Podgy to the inside and out.
While this is wet, attach your picture to the center of the pot.
Press it down, and smooth out the picture as best you can.
Apply another coat of the Podgy right away. The Podgy will act as glue.
When it is fully dry, apply another coat.
When it is fully dry, apply your last coat.
Not only will this protect your pot and picture, it will give it a nice glossy shine.
Wait until your pot is fully dry before inserting the plastic
pot with your plant into your beautiful cat terra cotta planter.
"Painted
Pots" is a terrific and easy to follow book containing many
plant pot, container and vase projects. It is a fun way to
decorate both the inside and the outside of your home. Perfect for
beginners as well as advanced crafters. This book contains
something for everyone!

I like to have 4 to 6 pictures per clay plant pot, and attach
them creating a circular ring around the center of the plant pot.
Either space them out so some of the pot shows between each
picture, or overlap them creating a solid ring.
Apply another layer of Podgy to the inside and out.

- Paint the top rim a different color.
- Paint a pattern on the rim. You
can paint free hand, use a stencil or an ink stamp. Some great patterns are cat’s paws, the word
"meow", or the name of your kitty cat, or flowers.
- Tie a pretty ribbon just under the rim.
Secure it with glue. If
you aren’t tying a bow, please remember to glue the ends on the
back of the pot.
- Purchase a terra cotta plant plate, and paint it as instructed above for the
pot. This adds a professional touch!
- Paint a grouping of plant pots. You
think one is beautiful, try a set of three! This really looks great when you make the matching plant
plate. If you're doing multiple pots, you can also use one large rectangular terra
cotta tray instead of individual plates.
