Traveling With Your Cat - Tips

Traveling with your cat can be tricky sometimes. In general, they do not enjoy traveling. They are creatures of habit, and the disruption in their routine is very stressful. In most cases, the only time a cat goes on a car trip, or is placed in a carrier, is when they are going to the vet. So they associate traveling with negative experiences.

If you plan on traveling with your cat, you should get your cat used to going in their carrier cage and on car trips. To get your cat used to their carrier cage, allow them access to it in your house. Leave the door open, and put a blanket or pillow in it, so they can sleep in it.

When you go out, it's nice to put one of your old shirts in the carrier as well as their blanket or pillow. Use one that hasn't been washed so it has your scent on it. This will reassure your cat.

Your cat's ID tag should be on at all times just incase they get away from you.

Ensure the hotel, motel, or condo allows cats.

To prevent your cat from getting out of the hotel room, ask housekeeping to either not clean your room, or clean it when you're there. When you're out of your room, put your cat in the bathroom just incase someone opens your hotel room door and your cat gets out.

Sometimes cats can get diarrhea from different water. To prevent this, bring water from home or use bottled.

• Quality cat travel carrier with your cat's ID on it.
• Harness with your cat's ID tag on it.
• Collar with your cat's ID tag on it.
• Leash.
• Litter box.
• Flushable cat litter.
• Plastic kitty litter scoop (if you're short on room, just use a baggie instead)
• Antibacterial wet naps for cleanup.
• Paper towels.
• Waste bags or baggies for cleanup.
• Treats.
• Cat food in individual zip lock bags. Put enough in each bag for a day.
• If your cat eats canned food, remember the can opener or buy cans with a pull-off lid.
• Bottled water, or water from home.
• Food and water dish.
• Cat Medications.
• Grooming tools if needed.
• Nail clippers.
• Your vet's phone number.
• Your cat's vaccination and rabies records. Check the country's requirements.
• Ensure cat vaccinations are current.
• Medical records if your cat has a history of any problems.
• Phone number and address of a local vet in your destination city.
• Favorite toys and pillow/blanket (I like to bring my cat's stuffed bunny. She loves to sleep with it.)
• Cat travel calming remedies
• Pet first aid kit.
