Cat Health & Care \ Should You Get a Second Pet?

Should You Get a Second Pet?

So you're thinking about adding another pet to your household, but are you ready for everything that entails? Below is a checklist of things to think about before adopting a second pet.

Are you ready for the commitment?

Pets are just like children. They require lots of love, patience, care, guidance and a long-term commitment. You never want to adopt a new pet on a whim without fully contemplating and committing to the amount of care they deserve.

Do you have the money to support another pet?

You'll want to consider the cost of food, essentials (toys, collars, leash, scratching posts, kitty litter), medications, spay/neuter costs, pest control, trainers, veterinary bills, kennel/babysitter costs when you travel, and pet insurance.

Do you and your family have the time to look after another pet?

You'll want to set aside the same amount of quality time you currently give to each pet, and provide it for each pet. So if you have one pet now, you'll want to set aside twice as much time.

Are your existing pets open to having new pets introduced?

Do your current pets like to have you, your family, and their home all to themselves? If so, you may want to reconsider adding new furry friends to your household. Some pets are very territorial and may attack the new animal.

Also think about how your current pets have responded to human and animal visitors in the past. If they responded well, they'll probably respond positively to a new pet.

Sometimes people want to adopt a new pet so their current pet will have company. Not all pets want company and can lead to conflicts, jealousy or depression in one of the animals.

In general, it is typically easier to introduce new pets to one another when both are young.

Will their temperament match your lifestyle?

Currently your household and lifestyle has a certain style and personality. Ensure the new pet will flawlessly fit into your current lifestyle to maintain a harmonious household.

Will another pet allow you the traveling freedom you currently enjoy?

If you enjoy traveling or take your pets everywhere (walks, shopping, friend's house, etc), consider whether adding an extra pet will still allow you to do so. And if not, is that OK with you?

Has the new pet received all their vaccines and are they healthy?

To ensure your existing pets are not at risk to disease, please ensure you have the new addition checked by a veterinarian, and that they receive all their vaccines.
