So what should you feed your newly weaned kitten? Kittens should always be fed kitten food, not cat or dog food.

Kitten food or growth formulas, rich in both protein and calories, provide kittens with a balanced diet suited for their special needs. Feeding your kittens quality kitten food will give them a healthy start to their life and will help protect them from various cat diseases.

If you’re feeding your kittens premium kitten food, there is no need to give them extra vitamins or other supplements. Too many supplements may be harmful. Consult with your vet before providing extra supplements.

Post-weaning kittens should eat about four times a day as their stomachs are still small. After six months, you can decrease the feeding to twice a day. If feeding canned food, keep the food refrigerated until you’re ready to use it. Let the portion warm up to room temperature first.

Kittens develop food preferences within the first few months, so to avoid finicky eaters, vary the type and flavor of food you feed them. To avoid stomach upset, always introduce them gradually to new food, by mixing some of the old with the new. Slowly increase the amount of new food, until the switchover is complete.

Keep feeding the kittens with kitten food until they are one year old. At that time, slowly change their food to maintenance cat food.
