Cat Carrier Tips for Using, Selecting and Purchasing

Cat Carriers

Cat carrier tips for using, selecting and purchasing soft, hard, plastic, cardboard, biking and air travel cat carriers.

Cat carriers, crates and cages are essential for your cat’s safety while being transported. Every cat owner should own a good quality cat carrier, cage or crate. One quality feline carrier is essential for one adult cat, and if you have two or more cats, you should own at least two.

Your cat should never walk around loose in the car when you’re driving. For their safety, put your cat in their cat carrier. This will prevent them from getting under your feet or doing something distracting to cause an accident. It will also prevent them from being thrown if the car stops suddenly. If you do get into an accident, it will keep them contained until help arrives.

Cat Carrier Tips

You should get your cat used to going in their carrier cage and on car trips. To get your cat used to their carrier cage, allow them access to it in your house. Leave the door open, and put a blanket or pillow in it, so they can sleep in it.

Layer the bottom of the carrier with crumpled up paper towels or shredded paper to soak up any urine in case of emergency. To make your cat comfy, also add their blanket, pillow, or your shirt (unwashed with your scent so your cat feels secure).

Put your cat’s ID tag on both your cat’s collar and the cat carrier.

Cat Carrier Tips for Car Travel

Cat carriers, cages or crates should be secured by looping the seat belt through the carrier handle and then lock it into place. Ensure the door is firmly closed.

Layer the bottom of the pet carrier with crumpled up paper towel to soak up any urine in case of emergency. To make your cat comfy, also add their blanket, pillow, or your shirt (unwashed with your scent on it so your cat feels secure).

Cat Carriers for Biking

Quality cat carriers for biking include:

Cat Carrier Types: Soft, Hard, Cardboard, Wicker

Cat carriers are available as small and large hard plastic, soft (with or without nice patterns), wicker and cardboard (corrugated or not) feline carriers. If traveling abroad by air or sea, select a soft travel carrier if your pet will be in the passenger area. If your pet will be in the cargo area, purchase a sturdy good quality carrier or cat crate.

Buying Cat Carriers

Buy a cat carrier that is about one and a half times the size of your cat so there is enough room to lie down, fully stand up, and easily turn around. It should be sturdy enough to hold your cat securely, properly latched, and well ventilated.

Cat carriers that can be cleaned and disinfected are best. Soft and hard cat carriers can be properly cleaned, but cardboard and wicker pet carriers cannot.

Samsonite, Sherpa, Petmate, Nylabone, Outward Hound and Global Front all make a variety of cat carriers. View cat carriers.
