Traveling With Your Cat by Car
Car travel with your cat can be very stressful for a cat.
To get your cat or cats used to traveling by car, take them for a ride once every week. Give them a treat in the car so they associate something positive with it.
Car Travel With Your Cat Tips - Litter Box
When traveling with your cat by car, remember to bring a kitty litter box with you. I like to buy a smaller one and put it on the floor in the back seat. Don't use kitty litter that is light and flies around easy, as it may blow out of the box when the car windows are open.
Car Travel With Your Cat Tips - Carriers
Your cat should never walk around loose in the car when you're driving. For their safety, put your cat in their
cat carrier.
This will prevent them from getting under your feet or doing something distracting to cause an accident. It will also prevent them from being thrown if the car stops suddenly. If you do get into an accident, it will keep them contained until help arrives.
Secure the carrier, cage or crate by looping the seat belt through the carrier handle and then lock it into place. Ensure the door is firmly closed.
Layer the bottom of the carrier with crumpled up paper towels or shredded paper to soak up any urine in case of emergency. To make your cat comfy, also add their blanket, pillow, or your shirt (unwashed with your scent so your cat feels secure).
Car Travel With Your Cat Tips - Exercise & Food
When you stop the car, let them walk around the car freely to stretch their legs and use the kitty litter. Ensure you give them water frequently, and food as required. Typically it is best to feed your cat two hours before the trip, and then hold off during traveling if your cat gets motion sickness.
Traveling With Your Cat by Car - Safety
When traveling with your cat by car, be careful with the weather.
If it's hot, do not leave them in the car with the windows closed. And do not leave them unattended for more than a few minutes. A warm car or a cold one can become a deathtrap very quickly, and many pets die each year from exposure.
If the weather is extremely hot, put an ice pack in the carrier, and cover the ice pack with a towel. If it's extremely cold, use a hot water bottle (never an electric blanket).
